My City My Place
Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad is more than just a city to me – it is my home, my pride and my place. Located on the banks of the River Sabarmati in Gujarat, Ahmedabad is a city where history and modern life come together beautifully. It carries stories of the past while moving confidently towards the future.
Ahmedabad was founded in 1411 AD by Sultan Ahmed Shah, after whom the city is named. It is said that he chose this place after seeing a unique sight, a small hare chasing a dog, which he took as a sign of courage and strength. Over the centuries, Ahmedabad grew into an important center of trade, culture and learning.
A City Known for Its History and Heritage
Ahmedabad is known for its rich heritage and historic landmarks. The old city, with its narrow streets and traditional houses called pols, reflects the city’s strong sense of community and culture. In 2017, Ahmedabad became India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City, a matter of great pride for its people.
The city is also closely connected with Mahatma Gandhi, who lived at the Sabarmati Ashram. This peaceful place played a significant role in India’s freedom movement and continues to inspire visitors from around the world.
Culture, Festivals and Traditions
Ahmedabad is a city full of life, color and celebration. Festivals like Uttarayan (Kite Festival), Navratri, Diwali and Janmashtami are celebrated with great enthusiasm. During Navratri, the city comes alive with Garba and Dandiya, bringing people together in joy and rhythm.
The culture of Ahmedabad reflects warmth, hospitality and strong family values. People here are known for their simple living, friendly nature and respect for traditions.
Ahmedabad is famous for its delicious and unique food. From dhokla, khandvi and fafda-jalebi to thepla and handvo, the city offers a wide variety of flavors. The Manek Chowk night food market is especially popular, where food lovers enjoy local dishes late into the night.
The city is also known for its love for vegetarian food, making it a special place for food enthusiasts.
Ahmedabad’s beauty lies in its balance between tradition and development. The Sabarmati riverfront is a peaceful and modern space where people walk, relax and spend time with family. At the same time, the city has grown into an important center for education, business and industry.
With beautiful temples, mosques, gardens and modern infrastructure, Ahmedabad offers something for everyone.
Ahmedabad is a city of stories, values and dreams. It teaches resilience, unity and progress while staying connected to its roots. For me, Ahmedabad is not just a place on the map – it is a feeling of belonging, comfort and pride.
Ahmedabad is my city, my place – a city that lives in my heart.
